What an ATS actually extracts
When you apply, the file is parsed into structured fields: name, contact, employers, titles, dates, skills, and education. That structured record is what recruiters search and what AI screening ranks. If the parser cannot find dates or employers, you look thinner than you are.
Common breakages: columns, tables, text boxes, logos over the header, and scanned images. A single-column text PDF with standard headings is the format JobBucket parsing — and most other ATS software — handles most reliably.
How to check your own resume before you apply
Open the PDF and try to highlight every line. If you cannot select the text, convert it. Read the file top to bottom as if you were a machine: does experience appear in one sequence with dates next to titles?
Then check content against one real job on JobBucket. Circle must-have skills in the vacancy. If they are true for you, they should appear in experience or a skills group — not only as a stuffed list. Upload the file in the JobBucket apps and review the AI resume score for gaps the model flags.
What JobBucket AI screen does on the employer side
After you apply, the vacancy owner can run AI resume screening and match against the role. Scores come with reasons. Recruiters can override them. That is different from a public “ATS checker” that pretends one number works for every company.
Hiring teams on JobBucket also use knockout questions on the vacancy and custom pipeline stages. A clean parse helps you get into that pipeline; it does not replace fit, notice period, or interview evidence.
Public context, not a fake score
Jobscan’s 2025 ATS Usage Report cites 97.8% Fortune 500 ATS adoption — a reminder that parse-safe files are table stakes at scale. Indian SMEs increasingly run the same loop on affordable software. JobBucket employer plans start at ₹1,499/mo after a free start.
A public “ATS checker” that pretends one percentage works for every vacancy is marketing. Your self-check plus the app score is enough before you apply; the employer’s criteria decide the rest.
